PEF is often compared to PET due to its similar chemistry; both polyesters are produced from the monomers ethylene glycol (MEG) and an aromatic diacid (furandicarboxylic acid \u2013 FDCA, or terephthalic acid respectively). However, despite their\u00a0similarities, PEF\u2019s small molecular difference gives rise to a number of different properties.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>PEF\u00a0has a 60 % lower carbon footprint compared to PET.<\/li>\n<li>PEF\u00a0has better barrier properties regarding oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water compared to PET, thus ensuring a longer shelf-life for the packaged products.<\/li>\n<li>When compared to the properties of PET, its polymer has a lower melting temperature\u00a0while the glass transition temperature is higher.<\/li>\n<li>Another advantage of the new material is its higher mechanical strength.<\/li>\n<li>PEF\u00a0can be processed in the same way and with the same equipment as PET.<\/li>\n<li>Its recycling process is the same as for PET.<\/li>\n<li>PEF\u00a0can be used for stretch blow moulding of bottles, for fibres, films, and more.<\/li>\n<li>Even biaxially oriented (BOPEF) film can be made from PEF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>That&#8217;s why Renewable Carbon Plastics is now organizing the 1st PEF World Congress in close cooperation with\u00a0the H2020 project\u00a0PEFerence.
