Vorige maand was Michiel Vos, oprichter en technisch directeur van het bedrijf, in Indonesi\u00eb met een handelsmissie onder leiding van de Nederlandse premier Mark Rutte. Veel van de kokosvezel verrot daar op de plantages. CocoPallet wil hier producten van maken \u2013 maar moet in de eerste plaats luisteren naar zijn mogelijke klanten, zegt Vos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9621\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CocoPallet-CTO-Michiel-Vos.-CocoPallet-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9621\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CocoPallet-CTO-Michiel-Vos.-CocoPallet-.jpg\" alt=\"Michiel Vos en een CocoPallet\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michiel Vos en een CocoPallet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Een heel duurzaam product<\/h2>\n<p>De technologie van CocoPallet werd meer dan tien jaar geleden ontwikkeld door Wageningen UR. Hij bestaat uit verhitten en persen van de grondstof; de lignine in het omhulsel smelt en lijmt de vezels samen, waardoor een compact en sterk groen materiaal ontstaat. Een tijd lang lag de technologie op de plank, maar hij wordt nu industrieel doorontwikkeld door CocoPallet. Heeft het bedrijf een patent op zijn proces? Neen, zegt Vos, de kennis zoals ontwikkeld door de universiteit is openbaar; maar CocoPallet heeft wel veel procesverbeteringen aangebracht waardoor het bedrijf een voorsprong heeft. Het product dat ze nu verkopen is zo hard en sterk dat het bestand is tegen ongedierte als termieten. Het bevat geen synthetische harsen en heeft geen behandeling nodig tegen vraat en verrotting met stoffen als methylbromide.<\/p>\n<p>Van een afstand bezien hebben cocopallets veel voordelen. Ze vervangen eenmalige houten pallets die veel worden gebruikt voor het vervoer van Oost- en Zuidoost-Azi\u00eb naar Europa en de VS. Het hout voor deze pallets wordt eerst van ver aangevoerd, bijvoorbeeld uit Scandinavi\u00eb. Elk jaar gaan er zo\u2019n 1,7 miljard pallets op deze route, waarvoor 170 miljoen bomen moeten worden gekapt. De cocopallet spaart bomen en hun vervoer, hij kan opnieuw worden gebruikt, hij is biologisch afbreekbaar wanneer hij wordt vermalen en draagt bij aan het inkomen van boeren in ontwikkelingslanden. Het product is zowel duurzaam als sterk genoeg. Maar eerdere ervaringen hebben Michiel Vos geleerd dat dit niet genoeg is. In zijn kantoor heeft hij een baseball slaghout van geperst bamboe. Het materiaal heeft het niet gered in de markt, omdat het duurder was dan illegaal gekapt hardhout. Niemand betaalt alleen voor duurzaamheid, zegt hij. De betere oplossing moet ook altijd goedkoper zijn, alleen daardoor krijg je de markt in beweging.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9623\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/MichielVos-CocoPallet-CTO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9623\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/MichielVos-CocoPallet-CTO.jpg\" alt=\"Michiel Vos\" width=\"175\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michiel Vos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>CocoPallet, ten dienste van de klant<\/h2>\n<p>Voor CocoPallet heeft hij zijn strategie daarom aangepast. Hij zoekt niches en probeert daarin te concurreren op prijs. Waarbij hij ook volume moet leveren. Hoewel arme boeren het meest kunnen profiteren van zijn product, en Vos vele plantages heeft bezocht, besteedt hij daarom meer dan de helft van zijn tijd aan contacten met mogelijke klanten. Grote internationale vervoermaatschappijen, Maersk, NYK en hun collega\u2019s; om te proberen hun problemen en behoeften te weten te komen. En het bedrijf is net begonnen met de ontwikkeling van een zeer sterke pallet voor zware vrachten als \u2018big bags\u2019 die tegenwoordig vaak worden gebruikt in de bouw. Vos praat ook met de chemische industrie, omdat de brandwerendheid van de cocopallet interessant is voor hen. Niches die het product weer een stap verder kunnen brengen. Het materiaal zou zeer geschikt kunnen zijn voor deurpanelen en hoedenplanken in de auto-industrie; maar Vos zegt dat de aanlooptijden daar misschien wel acht jaar bedragen, en het jonge bedrijf kan die tijd nog niet overbruggen.<\/p>\n<p>CocoPallet kreeg al enkele prijzen voor zijn product. Afgelopen oktober was het een van de tien winnaars van de Hello Tomorrow Bloomberg prijs, gekozen uit 3.500 aanmeldingen uit 105 landen. En zij wonnen een innovatieprijs van Accenture adviesbureau. Volgend jaar bouwen zij hun eerste commerci\u00eble fabriek, op Sumatra, langs een van de belangrijkste scheepvaartroutes ter wereld. In Indonesi\u00eb heeft Vos veel tijd besteed aan het onderzoeken van scheepsroutes, wegen, ligging van plantages. Om de beste plaatsen te bepalen voor nieuwe fabrieken \u2013 volgens plan drie tot vijf in de komende vijf jaar. Michiel Vos is hoopvol en afwachtend tegelijk. De mislukkingen van zijn vorige ondernemingen hebben hem geleerd dat succes en falen dicht naast elkaar liggen.
