\u2018In Nederland lopen we met het gebruik van biomassa achter het buitenland aan. In Duitsland staan bijvoorbeeld meer dan 3.000 ma\u00efsvergisters, in Nederland maar een paar. Aan de andere kant geeft ons dat ook de kans om de technologie nieuw te ontwikkelen.\u2019 Aldus Jan van den Broek, directeur van de Biosys Group (vroeger Zeasolutions) in Assen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Je kunt ma\u00efs beter verwaarden door eerst de eiwitten eruit te halen, dat is wat wij bij ZeaFuels, de ene poot van ons bedrijf, doen. We gaan uit van de korrel; die vergisten we met klassieke fermentatie, wat ethanol oplevert en ook een eiwitrijke reststroom. Deze reststroom kan worden verwaard, eerst als veevoer, later voor meer geavanceerde toepassingen. Het restant van de ma\u00efsplant, het stro, gaat bij ons naar de vergister en wordt omgezet in biogas.\u2019<\/p>\n

Beter vergistingsproces
\n<\/strong>\u2018In de tweede poot van ons bedrijf, ZeaGas, houden we ons bezig met verbetering en verduurzaming van het biogasproces. Een biogasinstallatie bestaat vaak uit een voor- en een navergister. In de voorvergister wordt de \u2018gemakkelijke\u2019 biomassa omgezet in biogas. Het restant gaat naar de navergister. Vaak worden navergisters gevoed met snellopers die het proces stimuleren, zoals resten van de voedingsmiddelenindustrie of glycerine. Maar de prijzen van deze snellopers gaan omhoog door de concurrentie en daardoor wordt deze route steeds moeilijker. Bovendien kan onder slechte omstandigheden de onverteerde rest oplopen tot 20%, en als deze op het land wordt gedeponeerd kan deze alsnog gaan vergisten en het broeikasgas methaan in de atmosfeer brengen. Dat is zeker niet wat we willen. Er is dus behoefte aan andere manieren om de werking van navergisters te verbeteren.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Bij ZeaGas voeren we een chemische bewerking uit met het digestaat uit de voorvergister, waardoor we dit beter ontsluiten. In de navergister gaat daardoor het proces veel sneller, en bovendien zetten we vrijwel alle biomassa om in biogas. Een deel van de actieve stikstof wordt omgezet in een meststof. Op dit proces hebben wij patent, en daarmee gaan we de komende jaren de markt op. Veranderingen gaan langzaam, maar de logica achter ons proces is ijzersterk en dat het gaat worden toegepast is evident. Onze strategie is erop gericht de technologie in Nederland te bewijzen en dan in de wereld te verkopen.\u2019<\/p>\n

Naar een duurzame plattelandsindustrie
\n<\/strong>\u2018Wij zitten in een sector waarin subsidies innovaties ook kunnen remmen. Kijk bijvoorbeeld wat er gaat gebeuren met de reststoffen van AVEBE en Cosun. Ze zijn deels om te zetten in chemicali\u00ebn zoals ethanol of butanol (vernieuwend proces, hoogwaardig product), maar ze maken er straks laagwaardiger biogas van, omdat de overheid die route wel subsidieert. Niet verkeerd, maar het kan beter. Ma\u00efs kunnen we omzetten in menselijke voeding of chemicali\u00ebn of veevoer, maar vanwege de subsidie gaat nog steeds een groot deel naar biogasproductie met de laagste toegevoegde waarde.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018De toekomst is aan de kleine tot middelgrote installaties op het platteland. In onze ogen kan de boerderij tot 60% ethanol goedkoop produceren of het kan ook in een co\u00f6peratie van een paar boeren. Die 60% ethanol is goed houdbaar en kan worden opgeslagen totdat hij per tankauto wordt afgevoerd voor verdere verwerking. De eiwitten zijn lokaal afzetbaar als veevoer. Ons ZeaFuels proces is een opstapje naar zo\u2019n nieuwe industrie.\u2019<\/p>\n
