\u2018\u2019Consumenten zullen spoedig gaan merken dat alledaagse producten worden gemaakt uit andere grondstoffen: zaken als kleren, schoenen, frisdrankflessen en zelfs autobanden worden gemaakt uit plantaardig materiaal in plaats van aardolie. Deze stille revolutie neemt steeds meer bezit van de markt.\u2019 Een optimistische noot aan het begin van hoofdstuk 5 van een boek dat verder nogal voorzichtig, om niet te zeggen wat pessimistisch is over biobased producten: Commercializing Biobased Products. Geredigeerd door Seth W. Snyder en uitgegeven door de Royal Society of Chemistry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Commercializing<\/a>De bedoeling van dit boek is om \u2018de kennis van de lezer te verbreden op gebieden als productieketens, milieueffect, stand van het beleid, economische analyse, en suggesties om verder te komen. Daarom wil dit boek meer een alomvattend beeld geven van de huidige industrie dan van de technologie\u2019 (p.2). Toch hebben de meeste bijdragen vooral een technologische inslag. Vooral met de vraagstelling, welke technologie\u00ebn, grondstoffen of chemische bouwstenen in de nabije toekomst kunnen doorbreken \u2013 vandaar het woord \u2018commercialisering\u2019 in de titel. Maar het boek gaat niet erg in op economische en marketingvraagstukken en behandelt niet diepgaand beleidsvragen, al bespreekt het wel tekortschietend beleid in de VS en Nederland. Het is in feite vrij academisch en chemisch gericht (trouw aan de uitgever). En, als ik nog iets kritisch mag zeggen, het behandelt bij lange na niet de hele biobased economy. Het gaat voorbij aan belangrijke biobased sectoren als agro\/food en papier en karton, en behandelt vooral de chemische industrie. Terwijl volgens mij het idee bioraffinage al inhoudt dat de biobased economy sectoroverschrijdend is, met de meest interessante stukjes misschien wel op de snijvlakken. Daardoor bespreekt het boek ook niet het centrale probleem bij commercialisering van de bioraffinage, het feit dat verschillende delen van de oogst moeten worden afgezet op verschillende markten, elk met hun eigen eisen aan volume en kwaliteit.<\/p>\n

De opkomst van biobased producten<\/h2>\n

Maar genoeg bekritiseerd! Het boek geeft veel interessante inzichten. Bijvoorbeeld, hoe doen de beroemde veelbelovende biobased platformchemicali\u00ebn het, in 2004 verkozen door US DoE als \u2018het best geschikt om chemicali\u00ebn uit aardolie te vervangen\u2019? Heel goed eigenlijk. Van de 15 chemicali\u00ebn zijn er al 4 in commerci\u00eble productie uit groene grondstoffen: barnsteenzuur, glycerol, sorbitol en xylitol. Bij drie andere zal dat binnen de komende 10 jaar gebeuren: methanol\/ethanol, 2,5-furaandicarbonzuur en 3-hydroxypropionzuur. Bij vijf andere zou dat misschien kunnen plaats vinden. Maar er moet nog veel werk worden gedaan. Onderzoekers komen er steeds meer achter, naarmate zij processen ontwikkelen voor de behandeling van groene grondstoffen, dat onze chemische kennis nog steeds zwaar wordt gekleurd door de petrochemie. De meest voorkomende reacties in de groene productieketen zijn anders; en vaak moeten daar nog goede katalysatoren voor worden ontwikkeld. De uitdaging is om alle gewenste reacties in \u00e9\u00e9n reactievat te laten plaats vinden zodat chemici niet steeds hun toevlucht moeten zoeken tot scheidingsprocessen.<\/p>\n

\"Lignine<\/a>
Lignine is nog nauwelijks onderzocht als toekomstige biobased grondstof.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Scheidingstechnologie is nog zo\u2019n kritische factor bij het commercialiseren van biobased producten. Ook hier zijn traditionele scheidingsmethoden als destillatie en verdamping minder belangrijk bij de verwerking van groene grondstoffen. Verbindingen in de biobased productieketen zijn meestal vast of vloeibaar, bijna nooit gasvormig \u2013 wat op zich al een groot verschil maakt in scheidingstechnologie. Moderne energiezuinige technieken als membraanscheiding en superkritische vloeistofextractie moeten verder worden ontwikkeld.<\/p>\n

De weg vooruit in de biobased economy<\/h2>\n

Het boek besteedt in een apart hoofdstuk aandacht aan lignine, de ruimschoots aanwezige maar tot nu toe grotendeels genegeerde groene grondstof. Tot nu heeft men lignine vooral gezien als restproduct, gebruikt voor energieopwekking. Onderzoekers hebben de uitdagende taak opgepakt om deze grondstof te behandelen en tot waarde te brengen. De auteurs merken terecht op \u2018dat lignine een aantrekkelijk startpunt is voor het maken van een groot aantal fijnchemicali\u00ebn en geavanceerde materialen.\u2019 Maar het onderzoek aan lignine begint nog maar net, en commerci\u00eble biobased producten liggen niet om de hoek.<\/p>\n

Er zijn hoofdstukken over microbi\u00eble oli\u00ebn, groene carbonzuren, CO2 conversie en butanolproductie. LCA en de productieketen komen goed aan bod. Beleidsvraagstukken worden niet systematisch behandeld. Met de kennis van nu is het wat ironisch dat sommige auteurs spreken over de zegeningen van \u2018de hoge energieprijzen\u2019 \u2013 de wereld verandert voortdurend en de uitdagingen voor biobased producten worden er alleen maar groter door. Het boek sluit af met een hoofdstuk geschreven door de redacteur met gedachten over de weg vooruit in de biobased economy. Om biobased producten met goed gevolg te commercialiseren zouden de VS en China moeten samenwerken. De Amerikaanse wetenschappelijke en technische know-how zouden moeten worden aangevuurd door de behoeften, wilskracht en financi\u00ebn van China, zo suggereert de redacteur. Hij hoopt dat de bio-economie \u2018de basis kan vormen voor economische ontwikkeling, ecologische duurzaamheid en internationale samenwerking\u2019 \u2013 de slotopmerking van het boek.<\/p>\n
