Biomateriaal, energiebron of beide? Het antwoord hangt ervan af wie u bent, en waar en wanneer u leeft. Het omschrijven van biomassa was altijd het domein van ecologen en landbouwonderzoekers. Ecologen omschrijven biomassa typisch als \u2018de som van alle levende materie in een bepaald gebied\u2019. Plantenfysiologen en landbouwonderzoekers zeggen misschien iets als \u2018biomassa is plantaardig materiaal of landbouwafval dat gebruikt wordt als energiebron\u2019. Plantaardig materiaal op zijn beurt is het product van fotosynthese. Dit wordt weer op twee manieren omschreven, waarbij de ene de nadruk legt op omzetting en opslag van zonne-energie, en de andere op het maken van materialen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Biomass.jpg\" alt=\"Biomassa\" width=\"282\" height=\"212\" \/>Vanaf de oliecrisis van 1973 heeft Brazili\u00eb grootschalig bio-ethanol gemaakt uit suikerriet, als motorbrandstof. Vanaf dat moment zijn ingenieurs biomassa gaan zien als energiebron. Toen in de jaren \u201990 zorgen over het klimaat ontstonden, omarmden beleidsmakers en politici eendrachtig biomassa (en de daaruit gemaakte biobrandstoffen) als panacee om de steeds stijgende CO2-concentratie in de aardatmosfeer te bestrijden. Vanaf nu werd biobrandstof beschouwd als \u2018CO2 in de tank\u2019. Men vergat voor het gemak dat zowel eerste als tweede generatie biobrandstoffen worden gemaakt uit gewassen of gewasresten. En een gewas heeft niet alleen CO2 nodig maar ook land, water, voedingsstoffen, kunstmest etc. De laatste jaren worden wij ons ervan bewust dat het omzetten van gewassen als ma\u00efs, tarwe of suikerriet in biobrandstoffen concurreert met hun gebruik in menselijke of dierlijke voeding.<\/p>\n<h2>Voedsel heeft voorrang bij telen en bewerken van biomassa<\/h2>\n<p>Energiedragers als benzine en voeding hebben \u00e9\u00e9n ding gemeen: eenmaal gebruikt zijn zij op. Daarom moet voedsel ook steeds opnieuw worden geproduceerd. Voedsel is bovendien bederfelijk en is in steeds grotere hoeveelheden nodig voor de nog toenemende wereldbevolking. En er is momenteel geen echt aanvaardbaar kunstmatig alternatief voor voedsel. In tegenstelling tot fossiele brandstoffen en materialen. Fossiele brandstoffen kunnen worden vervangen door duurzame bronnen als zon, wind, waterkracht en waterstof. Materialen kunnen, anders dan energie, vele malen worden gerecycled en als het nodig is kan alsnog hun energie-inhoud worden benut. Kunststoffen en andere chemicali\u00ebn uit fossiele brandstoffen kunnen worden vervangen door gelijkwaardige biomaterialen. Wel kan de al vaak voorspelde langzame overgang van fossiele naar groene materialen worden be\u00efnvloed door de huidige grootschalige productie van schaliegas in de VS. Ethaan en andere hogere alkanen die altijd werden gemaakt in naftakrakers, komen nu vaak uit schaliegas. Daardoor zijn diverse oude olieraffinaderijen nu gesloten of in de mottenballen gezet, wat soms weer leidt tot een tekort aan fossiele grondstoffen voor de kunststofindustrie.<\/p>\n<p>Samenvattend, landbouwgrond moet in de eerste plaats worden gebruikt voor het telen van voedingsgewassen en vezels. Het oneetbare deel van biomassa moet zeker op den duur vooral worden verwerkt tot biokunststoffen en andere groene chemicali\u00ebn. Soms kunnen biobrandstoffen alsnog een rol blijven spelen in de transitie naar een geheel duurzaam energiesysteem, zoals bij de omzetting van laagwaardig organisch afval van wisselende samenstelling in methaan en hogere alkanen.
