Een \u2018doorbraaktechnologie\u2019, dat is wat Elevance Renewable Sciences<\/a> de metathesereactie noemt waarop het bedrijf is gebouwd; en het vermeldt daarbij altijd trots de woorden \u2018Nobelprijs winnend\u2019 (Chemie, 2005). Elevance gebruikt deze reactie om zijn grondstof, voornamelijk palmolie (maar potentieel ook soja-, raapzaad-, jatropha- en andere oli\u00ebn), om te zetten in een veelheid van smeermiddelen, verzorgingsproducten, wassen, oplosmiddelen, polymeren en groene chemische tussenproducten. Hun huidige topproduct, Elevance Clean\u2122 1200<\/a>, won de prijs voor biobased productinnovatie van het jaar bij de World Bio Markets conferentie in Amsterdam, eerder deze maand.<\/strong><\/p>\n

De zes kernwaarden van Elevance<\/h2>\n

\u2018Was u verrast toen u de prijs kreeg?\u2019 vroeg ik de volgende dag aan Andy Shafer, de Executive Vice President van het bedrijf. \u2018Ik wist dat ons product uitzonderlijke eigenschappen heeft, dus ik vertrouwde er wel op,\u2019 zei hij tegen me. Elevance Clean\u2122 1200 \u2018is beter dan traditionele en biobased oplosmiddelen voor industri\u00eble ontvetting in de zware industrie, bij onderhoud en reparatie van voertuigen, en in de voedingsmiddelenindustrie,\u2019 zegt de Elevance website. En niet alleen werkt het heel goed, het product voldoet ook aan de strengste normen voor emissies van vluchtige organische verbindingen (VOC\u2019s). VOC\u2019s, zoals tolueen in uw verf of de benzine in uw tank, spelen een belangrijke rol in het reactiemechanisme waarbij ozon in onze omgeving wordt gevormd \u2013 ozon dat zeer schadelijk is voor de longen. De wetgeving rond VOC\u2019s verschilt tussen landen, en in de VS zelfs tussen staten, maar de normen zijn in de loop der jaren veel strenger geworden en veel bedrijven blijven nu liever aan de veilige kant. Zoals met Elevance Clean\u2122 1200. En als laatste voordeel, het topproduct van Elevance wordt gemaakt uit groene grondstoffen.<\/p>\n

Elevance, een spin-off van Cargill in 2007, is een opmerkelijk bedrijf omdat het een groot arsenaal industri\u00eble producten maakt met slechts 150 personeelsleden, ook nog eens op locaties v\u00e9r bij elkaar vandaan: Chicago en Surabaya (Indonesi\u00eb). Hoe doen zij dit? \u2018Hebben jullie een sterke bedrijfscultuur?\u2019 vroeg ik aan Andy Shafer. \u2018Absoluut,\u2019 antwoordde hij. \u2018Wij hebben zes kernwaarden\u2019 (en hij begon ze op te sommen, maar bleef steken op vijf, \u2018ik vergeet er altijd \u00e9\u00e9n, altijd weer een andere,\u2019 en zes is inderdaad een lastig aantal). Deze kernwaarden zijn: samenwerking, innovatie, passie; en vooruitstrevendheid, pragmatisme en vertrouwen. Het woord vertrouwen viel me op, want wij leven in een wereld gebouwd rond wantrouwen, het is bijna vastgelegd in zijn structuur; het was goed te horen dat bedrijven als Elevance niet alleen schone technologie\u00ebn ontwikkelen maar ook bewust proberen de menselijke verhoudingen te verbeteren. En ik herinnerde me het beroemde boek \u2018Trust\u2019 van Francis Fukuyama, een van de toonaangevende Amerikaanse filosofen, die stelt dat vertrouwen essentieel is voor economische groei.<\/p>\n

Samenwerking om risico\u2019s te verkleinen<\/h2>\n

Een van de redenen waarom Elevance actief kan zijn in veel markten (en ook nog een 180 kt fabriek heeft) met zo weinig mensen, is hun filosofie van samenwerking. Het bedrijf deelt zoveel mogelijk met andere bedrijven, klein en groot, om gebruik te maken van \u2018aanvullende activa en vaardigheden\u2019, en om \u2018risico\u2019s en investeringen van productontwikkeling te verkleinen\u2019, aldus Andy Shafer in zijn lezing. Dit \u2018schept verbreding en bedrijfsgroei\u2019 terwijl het bedrijf ook \u2018voortgang boekt in duurzaamheid.\u2019<\/p>\n

Een groot deel van Shafer\u2019s speech op de WBM was gewijd aan het thema \u2018oversteken van de kloof\u2019 tussen vroege enthousiaste klanten (\u2018visionairs\u2019) en praktisch ingestelde mensen. Hoe kunnen bedrijven koers houden bij het oversteken van de \u2018Vroege Markt\u2019 naar de \u2018Hoofdstraat\u2019? Het antwoord van Elevance bestaat uit een reeks voorzichtige stappen, beginnend met omschrijving van de klanten en analyse van hun beweegredenen, naar de keuze van partners en het bedenken van een strategie voor verkoop en prijsstelling. Elevance verkoopt niet al zijn producten onder de eigen naam; het verkoopt ook B2B tussenproducten als\u00a0Elevance Aria\u2122<\/sup> WTP 40<\/a> dat anderen kunnen gebruiken voor het samenstellen van hun smeermiddelen. In deze markten neemt de vraag naar biobased producten toe. Producten uit groene grondstoffen kunnen net iets anders zijn en nieuwe kansen bieden; soms zijn ze gewoon beter; en vaak zijn ze minder schadelijk voor het milieu.
