Het Myco Design Lab<\/a> van de Amsterdamse (internationale) kunststichting Mediamatic<\/a> verbindt de werelden van industrie en kunst. Dit programma gaat over alles wat wij kunnen doen met mycelium, de veelal ondergrondse schimmeldraden die het vegetatieve deel van schimmels vormen. Het Myco Design Lab onderzoekt, kweekt, verandert, toont, eet, kookt en vormt mycelium en alle producten die daaruit kunnen worden gemaakt.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mycelium als constructiemateriaal staat nog maar kort in de belangstelling. De pionier op dit gebied is Ecovative Design<\/a> waarover wij kort geleden schreven<\/a>. Met het Myco Design Lab maakt Mediamatic de oversteek naar de wereld van de kunst. Het Lab heeft, zoals veel programma\u2019s van Mediamatic, een open structuur, waarbij kunstenaars projecten kunnen aanmelden. Het maakt deel uit van het grote Bio Industry programma<\/a>, dat de mogelijkheden onderzoekt van materialen uit groene grondstoffen voor ontwerp, wetenschap en kunst. De afgelopen jaren draaide bijvoorbeeld het grote project De tostifabriek, waarbij op \u00e9\u00e9n plaats alle handelingen werden samengebracht die nodig zijn voor het maken van een tosti. Aquaponics (het samen kweken van vissen en waterplanten) is een andere belangrijke activiteit. Maar momenteel is het Myco Design Lab het grootste onderdeel van het Bio Industry programma. De webpagina van het drie jaar geleden begonnen programma bevat nu 89 onderdelen.<\/p>\n

Kunst en experiment<\/h2>\n

\u2018Wij onderzoeken nieuwe combinaties van materialen en paddenstoelen,\u2019 zegt Willem Velthoven, directeur van Mediamatic. \u2018Als ondergrond kunnen we stro gebruiken, of nog goedkoper, kaf van rijst of tarwe. We experimenteren met de schillen van cacaobonen, die je in Amsterdam (de grootste cacaohaven ter wereld) in grote hoeveelheden kunt krijgen. En de jute zakken waarin die bonen hier in Amsterdam aankomen. We onderzoeken hoe verschillende soorten paddenstoelen groeien op deze ondergronden. En wat we daarmee kunnen doen. Sinds kort kweken we ook puur mycelium, zonder ondergrond. Het is zacht en sterk, je kunt het vergelijken met zijde. Of wij komen leerachtige materialen tegen. Als je ze behandelt met azijnzuur krijg je materialen die lijken op bakeliet.\u2019<\/p>\n

Mediamatic bestaat al tientallen jaren en heeft zich in het begin toegelegd op IT-achtige projecten onder de prachtige naam Doors of Perception. Veel nadruk ligt nu op projecten op basis van de levende natuur, de Bio Industry met het Myco Design Lab als onderdeel. Ze doen alles low-key en goedkoop. \u2018We proberen gewoon, we weten niet waar het naartoe gaat.\u2019 Mediamatic gaat deze materialen bijvoorbeeld zelf gebruiken bij de restauratie en wederopbouw van het verwaarloosde kantoorgebouw dat het sinds kort als onderkomen heeft. Het ontwikkelt mycotegels die het gaat gebruiken voor de isolatie van het dak van twee aanpalende loodsen. \u2018We zouden de materialen, gemaakt uit aardolie, kunnen kopen om de hoek en dan zouden we de dakisolatie binnen een week af hebben. Maar wij doen het op onze manier.\u2019 De tegels die wij zagen, leken ons al heel geschikt, al waren ze nog wat bros.<\/p>\n

Myco Design Lab heeft vele vertakkingen<\/h2>\n

Mediamatic werkt bij dit thema samen met wetenschappelijke onderzoekers. De belangrijkste wetenschappelijke connectie voor het Myco Design Lab is de Universiteit Utrecht, en daarin vooral onderzoeker Han W\u00f6sten. Zijn specialiteit is het waaiertje, een paddenstoelensoort die over de hele wereld voorkomt. W\u00f6sten heeft het genoom van dit paddenstoeltje ontrafeld; en dat geeft myco-ontwerpers de mogelijkheid dit te gebruiken als basis voor hun schetsboek. Een andere belangrijke connectie is Peter Oei, programmadirecteur van de Stichting Innovatieve Glastuinbouw Nederland (SIGN). Peter is in zijn schaarse vrije tijd gespecialiseerd in de teelt van exotische paddenstoelen als shiitake en Koningsoesterzwam. Hij is schrijver van het boek \u2018Mushroom Cultivation\u2019 dat inmiddels zijn derde update heeft beleefd.<\/p>\n

Met mycomaterialen kunnen vormgevers steeds meer doen. Wij zagen leerachtige materialen toegepast bij het maken van schoenen. Andere kunstenaars ontwerpen textielsoorten. Eetbare paddenstoelen staan sterk in de belangstelling, net als verwante thema\u2019s als het experimenteren met bier. De vormen en uitingen van het Myco Design Lab zijn eindeloos.
