Tenminste, als we kiezen voor mycelium, het groenst mogelijke materiaal: uit groene grondstoffen, groeiend op elke ondergrond (vooral op afval), en volledig afbreekbaar in de natuur. We kunnen het in alle vormen maken: laat het groeien in een holle ruimte gevuld met neutrale stoffen als stro of kaf, en in \u00e9\u00e9n of twee dagen heb je je verpakkingsmateriaal, beeld of wat je ook maar had willen maken. Na sterilisatie door verhitting krijg je het groenst denkbare materiaal. Mycelium werd voor industrieel gebruik ontwikkeld door <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecovativedesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecovative Design<\/a>, een bedrijfje gevestigd in Green Island (what\u2019s in a name) in de Amerikaanse staat New York, dat deze materialen kweekt onder de naam Mushroom\u00ae Materials. Het bedrijf zegt zelf dat \u2018Ecovative wereldleider is in het toepassen van mycelium-technologie bij het maken van constructiematerialen. Wij hebben als team ervaring met velerlei landbouwproducten uit de VS en vele andere landen die we kunnen gebruiken als grondstof voor biomaterialen. Onze oplossingen passen zich aan bij de natuur, gebruik makend van de hele gereedschapskist van groene grondstoffen van de aarde.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6936\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6936\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/cofounders_big.jpg\" alt=\"Ecovative co-founders\" width=\"218\" height=\"328\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ecovative oprichters Eben Bayer (links) en Gavin McIntyre in hun productieruimte<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ecovative Design is opgericht door twee studenten, Eben Bayer en Gavin McIntyre, na hun afstuderen in 2007. Met hun revolutionaire product wonnen ze, vooral vanwege hun duurzaamheid, vele prijzen in het korte bestaan van hun bedrijf. Op dit moment vormen verpakkingsmaterialen hun belangrijkste product. Onder meer wijn en computers worden verstuurd in mushroom materials. Deze verpakkingen zijn een alternatief voor polystyreenschuim \u2013 het bedrijf stelt dat het tienduizenden piepschuim verpakkingsonderdelen heeft vervangen door mushroom packaging \u2013 en zij zijn perfect afbreekbaar: na gebruik kunnen zij worden verkruimeld en bij de composthoop gedaan. Het bedrijf vestigt er de aandacht op dat \u2018de afbraaktijd van de meeste plastics gewoon onbekend is, omdat deze pas 70 tot 80 jaar bestaan. In die tijd heeft men geen ontleding waargenomen, omdat er zich geen organismen hebben ontwikkeld die plasticbindingen goed kunnen verbreken. Men zegt vaak dat polystyreenschuim ontleedt in een paar honderdduizend jaar, maar eigenlijk weet niemand dat.\u2019 Zelfs biologisch afbreekbare PLA-flessen ontleden niet in de composthoop in je tuin, zegt Ecovative. Ja, ze ontleden in industri\u00eble compostinstallaties, bij 60oC. Maar mushroom materials ontleden zelfs in je eigen tuin.<\/p>\n<h2>Mycelium board en isolatiemateriaal<\/h2>\n<p>Mycelium is ook een goede isolator, dus mushroom materials kunnen in de toekomst worden gebruikt overal waar isolatiemateriaal nodig is (huizen, auto\u2019s enz.). Mycelium is ook heel geschikt om plantaardige materialen aan elkaar te binden en zo \u2018Myco Board\u2019 te vormen. We hoeven dan dus geen gebruik te maken van formaldehyde, een kankerverwekkende stof, bij het maken van meubels van spaanplaat. Met mycelium-technologie, zegt Ecovative, kunnen we kwalitatief goed biologisch constructiemateriaal maken, zonder gebruik van gevaarlijke chemicali\u00ebn. En het bedrijf heeft ook kort geleden een <a href=\"http:\/\/giy.ecovativedesign.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grow It Yourself<\/a> pakket op de markt gebracht waarmee ontwerpers, innovators, studenten, of wie dan ook, materialen kunnen laten groeien in elke gewenste vorm.<\/p>\n<p>Als de wereld dus echt duurzaam zou willen worden, zou deze gewoon mushroom materials moeten gaan gebruiken. Van het bedrijf dat \u2018wil samenwerken met de industrie en met consumenten om de wereld te bevrijden van giftige, onduurzame materialen,\u2019 zoals de website van Ecovative het formuleert.<\/p>\n<p><em>Interessant?
