Ze liet het grote scala producten zien dat we met moderne technologie kunnen maken door bioraffinage van hout, de meest overvloedige natuurlijke grondstof. Alles, van kleding tot menselijk voedsel, ligt nu binnen het bereik van technologische mogelijkheden.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6846\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Johanna-Buchert.jpg\" alt=\"Johanna Buchert\" width=\"200\" height=\"220\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Johanna Buchert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Bestaande en nieuwe processen in houtbioraffinage<\/h2>\n<p>Niet toevallig bloeit de nobele kunst van houtbioraffinage in Finland, een land dat elk jaar 100 miljoen m3 hout produceert. Papier en karton en zaaghout hebben van oudsher de houtverwerkende industrie bepaald. Een traditionele houtpulpindustrie in de jaren \u201960 en \u201970 maakte ook ethanol, eiwitten (als veevoer) en veel lignosulfonaat, een laagwaardig bijproduct; dat was al een ge\u00efntegreerde houtbioraffinaderij. Het moderne kraft pulpproces leidt tot minder producten: papier en karton als hoofdproducten en energie als bijproduct. Maar het idee van houtbioraffinage wordt nu nieuw leven ingeblazen met een aantal levensvatbare mogelijke bijproducten. In de toekomst kan een fabriek naast cellulosevezel ook waardevolle producten maken uit de bast (zoals fijnchemicali\u00ebn en medicijnen), houtextracten (vetzuren gebruikt in producten als alkydharsen op waterbasis), pulpvloeistof (koolhydraten toegepast in hydrocollo\u00efden, emulgeermiddelen en voedingsmiddelen) en lignine die kan worden opgewerkt tot biobrandstoffen of waardevolle chemicali\u00ebn. Met moderne technologie kan de fabriek van de toekomst er totaal nieuw uitzien, met vele hoofdproducten, zowel bulk als hoogwaardig.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6844\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wood-biorefinery.jpg\" alt=\"Houtbioraffinaderij\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Houtbioraffinaderij<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Onderzoekers ontwikkelen nieuwe technologie\u00ebn voor gecontroleerde afbraak van houtige biomassa tot zijn belangrijkste onderdelen (vezels, hemicellulose, lignine), in veel beter verwerkbare vormen. Hiermee kan men zowel goed hydrolyseerbare pulp maken voor enzymatische omzettingen naar ethanol of andere bulkchemicali\u00ebn, als reactieve cellulosevezels die kunnen worden gebruikt in composieten of textiel. Vooral in Finland en Zweden zoeken onderzoekers naarstig naar cellulosetextiel dat katoen kan vervangen. Er zullen vormen van lignine en hemicellulose op de markt komen met nieuwe specificaties, waardoor nieuwe eindgebruikers kunnen toetreden. De belangstelling voor lignine als grondstof voor chemicali\u00ebn en materialen neemt toe, en binnen het kraft proces ontwikkelt men processen voor afscheiding van lignine. Deze vernieuwde houtbioraffinage kan zwavelvrije lignine opleveren, met vele voordelen bij verdere verwerking tot chemicali\u00ebn en materialen. Er is veel belangstelling voor toepassingen van lignine: er komt jaarlijks enorm veel van vrij, en de verscheidenheid van waardevolle stoffen die we uit deze aromatische grondstof kunnen onttrekken is haast eindeloos.<\/p>\n<h2>Doorbraaktechnologie\u00ebn<\/h2>\n<p>Maar een echte doorbraak naar een nieuwe houtindustrie met houtbioraffinage kan komen van het gebruik van nieuwe scheidings- en verwerkingstechnologie\u00ebn. Zoals met ionische vloeistoffen (ionic liquids, IL) en sterk eutectische oplosmiddelen (deep eutectic solvents, DES) die de cellulosestructuur kunnen openbreken en cellulose kunnen oplossen. Hierdoor komen biomassa-bouwstenen beschikbaar die met de zich snel ontwikkelende biotechnologie (in het bijzonder synthetische biologie) kunnen worden omgezet tot een zeer groot scala eindproducten.<\/p>\n<p>Johanna Buchert voorziet dus dat wij in de toekomst hout op een gecontroleerde manier kunnen ontleden, om even gecontroleerd weer nieuwe materialen en structuren te kunnen opbouwen. Er zullen vele producten uit cellulose op de markt komen, van bulkproducten tot polymeren en hoogwaardige textielvezels. Uit lignine zullen we misschien geen energie meer maken, maar hoogwaardige aromatische chemicali\u00ebn en materialen. Met nieuwe technologie maken we biologisch actieve stoffen, te gebruiken als voedingsmiddel of medicijn \u2013 ze bestaan al en er zullen nog vele volgen. Houtbioraffinage is nog maar net aan zijn opmars begonnen en zal ons nog gaan verrassen.
