Een goed voorbeeld kan de Biobased Delta worden. Nu nog slechts een stukje Zuidwest Nederland en Vlaanderen. Het begon hier als een samenwerking tussen het biobased onderzoek van de Universiteit van Gent en de Kanaalzone met haar grote agrarische en chemische bedrijvigheid, via BioBase Europe met Ghent Energy Valley en Biopark Terneuzen aan respectievelijk Vlaamse en Nederlandse kant. In dit deel van de delta zijn allemaal bedrijven gevestigd die in meer of mindere mate ge\u00efnteresseerd zijn in de biobased economy. Bekende bedrijven als Dow Chemical, Cargill, het Noorse Yara met Arkema en Zeeland Refineries (Total\/Lukoil) in Sloe. Yara en Arkema gaan met algen\/wieren aan de slag op demo-schaal. De Kanaalzone koppelt reststromen als CO2 en warmte aan de behoeften van de glastuinbouw in het gebied. In Gent doet men onderzoek aan biomassa; daar komt een &#8216;polyvalente&#8217; (multi-purpose) proeffabriek voor diverse unit operaties, zowel biochemisch als chemisch. Antwerpen ontwikkelt het havengebied &#8216;Blue Gate&#8217; aan de Schelde voor biomassa. Als we nog verder kijken naar Noord-Frankrijk zien we het biobased gebied Les Sohettes van IAR dat heel goed op een aantal terreinen nauw zou kunnen samenwerken met het Biobased Delta Cluster.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4328\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4328\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4328\" alt=\"Hoofdplaat Scheldedijk\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hoofdplaat-Scheldedijk2-300x194.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hoofdplaat-Scheldedijk2-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hoofdplaat-Scheldedijk2-500x324.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hoofdplaat-Scheldedijk2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">De regio rond de Westerschelde is een belangrijk landbouwgebied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Biomassa wordt steeds belangrijker<\/strong><br \/>\nIn Bergen op Zoom is Sabic ge\u00efnteresseerd in onderzoek naar bioaromaten. Het bedrijf nam het initiatief voor de Green Chemistry Campus en stelde zijn lab open voor bedrijven en gaf ondersteuning. Dergelijke &#8216;open innovatie&#8217; is een unieke actie in de chemie. Het betekent nogal wat voor een bedrijf om anderen in zijn laboratoria toe te laten. Het gebeurde, en inmiddels is de ontwikkeling goed op gang. Er hebben zich al tien bedrijven gevestigd op terrein. TNO en het Vlaamse VITO werken er samen aan onderzoek aan lignine en aan C5 (en hogere) suikers. De eerste ontwikkelingslijn, die zeer dicht tegen de petrochemie aan zit is om uit biomassa &#8216;groene nafta&#8217; te maken. De volgende stappen zijn de bioaromaten en de hogere alifatische verbindingen, allebei typen verbindingen die weinig vanuit schaliegas en schalieolie gemaakt kunnen worden en waarnaar dus een hoge marktvraag zal ontstaan. Gedurende die tijd wordt biomassa steeds belangrijker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naar brede regionale samenwerking<\/strong><br \/>\nNaar het noorden ligt Rotterdam waar plannen bestaan voor de bouw van een isobutanolfabriek uit biomassa. Er zijn delen van de provincie Zuid-Holland waar de tuinders in het Westland met hun inhoudsstoffen en kennisinstituut mee zullen gaan doen, en er is de TU Delft en het BE-Basic programma, waarin ondermeer DSM en innovatieve MKB bedrijven participeren. Daarboven ligt het bloembollengebied dat zou kunnen aansluiten. Het MKB kan aanhaken voor opleidingen en onderzoek via het Centre for Biobased Economy (CBBE). Partners in CBBE zijn onder andere WUR, Avans Hogeschool, HAS en InHolland, en nog enkele andere Hogescholen.<\/p>\n<p>Zo kan binnen de Biobased Delta een regiogebonden relatie ontstaan tussen biobased bedrijven en instellingen uit Oost- en West-Vlaanderen, de provincie Antwerpen, de Nederlandse provincies Zeeland, Noord-Brabant en Zuid-Holland, en Noord-Frankrijk die gezamenlijk zouden kunnen optrekken naar Brussel. De contacten zijn ondertussen gelegd.
