Deze maand haalde BioBTX de \u20ac 80 miljoen op<\/a>, nodig om zijn eerste fabriek op commerci\u00eble schaal te bouwen. Deze zal benzeen, tolueen en xylenen (BTX) produceren uit gemengd plastic afval. Een grote stap in de richting van circulaire productie van plastics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BTX technologie<\/strong><\/h2>\n

De technologie van BioBTX<\/a> houdt in dat we vanaf nu vele alledaagse producten kunnen maken uit afval. Producten als isolatieschuimen, coatings, batterijen en medicijnen. Een grote kans voor circulaire productiemodellen. BioBTX heft zijn technologie al succesvol gedemonstreerd in zijn proeffabriek in Groningen.<\/p>\n

Het project van BioBTX komt te staan bij de PETRA Circular Chemicals Plant in Delfzijl. De fabriek zal jaarlijks 20.000 ton gemengd plasticafval verwerken tot hernieuwbare aromaten. Deze zullen de stoffen uit fossiele bronnen vervangen, en tegelijkertijd laagwaardig plasticafval omzetten in hoogwaardige chemicali\u00ebn. Als de fabriek succesvol zal zijn, is het bedrijf van plan zijn technologie wereldwijd aan te bieden aan de chemische industrie. Het bedrag van \u20ac 80 miljoen is bijeengebracht door vele partijen, zowel uit het bedrijfsleven als uit de overheid.<\/p>\n

Uit gemengde plastics<\/strong><\/h2>\n

De ICCP technologie die de fabrieken zullen gebruiken bestaat enerzijds uit chemische recycling op basis van pyrolyse. Het materiaal wordt verhit zonder zuurstof; hierbij splitst het in kleinere moleculen. Bij deze technologie worden ze daarna weer samengevoegd tot BTX. Deze combinatie van technieken is uniek.<\/p>\n

Het grote voordeel bij deze werkwijze is dat het bedrijf gebruik van maken van gemengde plastics. Deze hoeven niet bij voorbaat te worden uitgesplitst. Bovendien zit het in de pijplijn dat binnenkort bedrijven hun plasticafval niet meer mogen uitvoeren naar landen buiten de EU. Daardoor hebben we behoefte aan een techniek waarmee we plasticafval kunnen behandelen dat niet mechanisch kan worden gerecycled. Bij deze techniek blijft koolstof zolang mogelijk in de keten. Wel is er veel energie nodig, omdat de technologie van BioBTX ook pyrolyse gebruikt. Maar toch is dit minder dan de energie, nodig om deze plastics te maken uit aardolie.<\/p>\n

Opschalen<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Met de investering van \u20ac 80 miljoen wil BioBTX zijn technologie opschalen. De capaciteit van de nieuwe fabriek zal 20.000 ton per jaar zijn. Nog altijd een druppel op een gloeiende plaat, vergeleken met de vraag vanuit de chemische industrie. Aromatische koolwaterstoffen vormen een enorme markt met een waarde van meer dan $300 miljard per jaar. Ze vormen de basis van 40% van alle chemicali\u00ebn. Maar deze markt heeft dringend goedkope circulaire alternatieve stoffen nodig. De transitie moet klein beginnen om te kunnen groeien.<\/p>\n

Met deze recyclingtechnologie kunnen we duurzame BTX maken op commerci\u00eble schaal, tegen prijzen vergelijkbaar met fossiele BTX. Bovendien zullen we er laagwaardig plasticafval mee kunnen opwerken, die anders verbrand zou worden. De nieuwe fabriek zal eind 2026 moeten draaien. Uiteindelijk wil BioBTX zijn technologie wereldwijd verkopen aan ge\u00efnteresseerde bedrijven.<\/p>\n
