Deze week bevatte <\/strong>World Bio Market Insights<\/strong><\/a> een interessant artikel over bio-economie en circulariteit. Deze <\/strong>zijn beide nodig<\/strong><\/a> voor duurzaamheid binnen de waardeketens; maar ze zijn niet hetzelfde. We moeten hen allebei verzorgen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bio-economie en circulariteit<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Groene (biobased) materialen komen uit de natuur. Zoals hout, algen of schaaldieren. Maar groene materialen zijn vaak niet circulair. Circulaire materialen worden gemaakt uit afvalproducten<\/a>; of ze ontstaan doordat een ouder product aan het eind van zijn levensduur een andere bestemming krijgt. Met circulariteit maken we een nieuw en waardevol product uit een oud of nevenproduct. We hebben circulariteit nodig; want daardoor hoeven we minder maagdelijke grondstoffen te winnen (met bijbehorend energiegebruik), en daardoor hoeven we minder producten af te danken.<\/p>\n

Bio-economie en circulariteit zijn verschillend maar kunnen samengaan. World Bio Market Insights geeft het voorbeeld van een composteerbaar verpakkingsmateriaal, gemaakt van landbouwafval. Hier is van belang dat het van afval is gemaakt \u2013 want dan zijn er geen maagdelijke grondstoffen nodig. Het oude product kan zelfs nog duurzamer worden als het bij afbraak voedingsstoffen voor planten zou afgeven. Maar dit veronderstelt natuurlijk een afvalsysteem waarbij biologisch afbreekbare stoffen terug op het land worden gebracht.<\/p>\n

Duurzaamheid<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Groene materialen zijn niet uit zichzelf circulair, ze kunnen zelfs milieuschadelijk zijn. Bijvoorbeeld als er bij zijn productie broeikasgassen worden uitgestoten. Of als de stof niet kan worden gerecycled, eenmaal afgedankt. Want dan hebben we steeds weer energie en grondstoffen nodig bij het maken van het product. Maar het wordt natuurlijk anders als we dit product kunnen maken uit afval. Dan zouden we alleen wat energie, en misschien wat maagdelijk materiaal, moeten inbrengen.<\/p>\n

Hierdoor is biobased (groen) niet vanzelf ook duurzaam. Voor het laten groeien van bomen en planten hebben we land en grondstoffen nodig. Niet-circulaire groene materialen kunnen net als elke ander product op de schroothoop belanden. Veel groene plastics zijn bijvoorbeeld hetzelfde als plastics uit aardolie.<\/p>\n

Circulariteit<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Een van de instellingen die circulariteit bevorderen is de Europese Unie. In 2015 publiceerde deze een actieplan met de titel Maak de cirkel rond – Een EU-actieplan voor de circulaire economie. <\/em>Een van de achterliggende redenen is de noodzaak om klimaatdoelen te halen. Zelfs als het gaat over groene materialen. Een van de EU-instellingen die de bio-economie bevorderen is Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU)<\/a>. Een van de projecten daarvan heet SYMBA, gericht op effici\u00ebnt ontwikkelen van regionale nul-afvalstromen die circulariteit verbinden met duurzaamheid. Een belangrijke drijvende kracht voor versterkte regionalisatie is veiligheid, onder invloed van de sterke reductie van import van Russisch gas. SYMBA wil \u2018waardeketens strakker maken, regionaal beter gegrondvest, en minder kwetsbaar voor verstoringen.\u2019<\/p>\n

De methode bij uitstek om biomassa zo circulair mogelijk te maken is cascadering. Biomassa zou daartoe bij elk gebruik zo hoog mogelijk in de waardeketen moeten zitten. Het doel van cascadering is, eindige biomassastromen zo effici\u00ebnt mogelijk te gebruiken; en zo lang mogelijk het gebruik in de vorm van energie uit te stellen. Verbranding is de laatste stap in deze cascade; zo lang mogelijk te voorkomen.<\/p>\n

Naar een markt voor groene materialen<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Een van de bedrijven actief op dit terrein is Circular Investment<\/a>. Dit specialiseert zich in de levering van circulaire groene grondstoffen. Zoals \u2018bijproducten van de bosbouw uit hard- of zachthout; organische nevenproducten als eiwitten, suikers en stijfsel uit land- en tuinbouw; en niet-groene nevenproducten uit de bouw.\u2019<\/p>\n

Toch is het niet gemakkelijk, een markt voor groene materialen op te bouwen. Leveringsketens moeten nog ontstaan. En de sector zou veel baat hebben bij regulering, waarmee bijvoorbeeld een markt kan ontstaan voor circulaire groene grondstoffen. Dit zou investeerders en leveranciers kunnen aantrekken, en daarmee een start geven aan circulaire groene materialen.<\/p>\n
