Steeds meer mensen worden resistent tegen antibiotica. Rond 2050 zou dit wel tot tien miljoen doden per jaar kunnen leiden. Jim O&#8217;Neill, Chairman of the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Een belangrijke bedreiging<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>De WHO vindt dat antibioticaresistentie tot de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/antimicrobial-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top tien bedreigingen van de algemene gezondheid<\/a> behoort. De belangrijkste oorzaak is het verkeerde gebruik dan wel overmatig gebruik van antibiotica. Ook gebrek aan schoon water en onhygi\u00ebnische omstandigheden dragen hiertoe bij. Maar, zo zegt de WHO, antibioticaresistentie leidt tot hoge kosten. Niet alleen door sterfgevallen en blijvend letsel, ook door de kosten van de gezondheidszorg voor zieke mensen. Toch hebben we antibiotica nodig. Veel van het succes van de moderne gezondheidszorg berust erop; laat staan het nut van deze stoffen bij operaties en chemotherapie.<\/p>\n<p>Antibioticaresistentie betekent dat ziekteverwekkers niet langer vatbaar zijn voor de middelen waarmee wij hen bestrijden. Het gaat daarbij niet alleen om bacteri\u00ebn, maar ook om virussen, schimmels en parasieten. Wij kunnen mensen die met zo\u2019n resistente ziekteverwekker zijn besmet, niet meer genezen. Bovendien speelt het probleem ook bij dieren als koeien. Foto: NIAID NIH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Toenemende resistentie<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Een belangrijke oorzaak van de toenemende resistentie ligt in de manier waarop wij antibiotica gebruiken. Onnodig gebruik en te veel gebruik komen veel voor, waardoor ziekteverwekkers resistentie ontwikkelen. Daardoor krijgen sommige lijders aan sommige infecties deze maar moeilijk onder controle: ontstekingen van de urinewegen en geslachtsorganen, bloedvergiftiging, en sommige vormen van diarree. Voor infecties met sommige resistente bacteri\u00ebn (Klebsiella pneumoniae en MRSA) is er nog maar \u00e9\u00e9n effectief middel. Ook andere vormen van resistentie bestaan. Zo zijn malaria verspreidende parasieten vaak niet meer vatbaar voor hun bestrijdingsmiddelen.<\/p>\n<p>Vaak denken mensen dat dit probleem hoge ogen gooit op onderzoekagenda\u2019s. Maar dat is niet zo, zegt Oscar Kuipers, hoogleraar in Groningen, tegen het Nederlandse blad De Onderzoeker. Farmaceutische bedrijven zien te weinig verdienmogelijkheden. Daardoor valt de pijplijn van nieuwe antibiotica steeds meer droog. Terwijl onderzoek naar nieuwe antibiotica tijdrovend is en veel afvallers kent. Sommige stoffen werken wel maar zijn van zichzelf te giftig. Beeld: BartVL71, Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Tegen antibioticaresistentie<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2016 leidde dit in Nederland tot het opzetten van NACTAR (Novel Antibacterial Compounds and Therapies Antagonizing Resistance). Dit programma is zo ver dat hierin een aantal kandidaat-medicijnen ontwikkeld is. Nu staan preklinische testen op het programma om deze te testen. Daaronder een variant van het antibioticum vancomycine, waartegen steeds meer resistentie ontstaat. De nieuwe variant is zowel krachtiger, als actief tegen resistente bacteri\u00ebn.<\/p>\n<p>Maar het traject naar productie van zo\u2019n stof naar industri\u00eble productie is lang. Allereerst moet de veiligheid van het medicijn worden bewezen. Dan volgen tests op mensen. Over drie jaar, als alles goed gaat. Maar er is geen alternatief. We kunnen het probleem van antibioticaresistentie niet aan de markt overlaten \u2013 die doet daar te weinig aan. De route van stoffen tegen antibioticaresistentie is lang.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Een nieuwe aanpak<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Niet alleen de volksgezondheid is in het geding. Bij dieren hebben zich net zulke problemen voorgedaan. Misschien staat het vertrouwen van mensen in de gezondheidszorg wel op het spel, zegt de site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.belgium.be\/nl\/bestrijding-van-antimicrobiele-resistentie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health.belgium.be<\/a>. Vooral wanneer resistente bacteri\u00ebn zich zouden gaan verspreiden in ziekenhuizen of via levensmiddelen. Nog afgezien van de kosten die het probleem met zich mee kan brengen. De aanpak zal niet gemakkelijk zijn. Zeker niet nu ook de dierlijke sector bij zo\u2019n aanpak betrokken moet worden.<\/p>\n<p><em>Interessant?
