Hout komt terug als bouwmateriaal. Niet meer het brandbare materiaal van vroeger \u2013 waarbij een halve Middeleeuwse stad kon afbranden. Maar met moderne, performante en duurzame constructies. Houtbouw betekent een kleine revolutie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Houtbouw, nieuwe mogelijkheden<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Onlangs besteedde change.inc weer aandacht aan houtbouw<\/a>. Hout had lang een ongunstige reputatie: het brandde te gemakkelijk. Steen, cement, beton en ijzer waren in dat opzicht veel beter. Bovendien werd hout gezien als onbetrouwbaar \u2013 de bouwkundige eigenschappen waren niet precies te voorspellen. Elke houtsoort is anders, zelfs binnen \u00e9\u00e9n houtsoort kunnen er flinke verschillen optreden. Vanaf de vijftiende eeuw overvleugelden de nieuwe materialen het hout \u2013 alleen in zeer bosrijke streken bleef houtbouw bestaan.<\/p>\n

Tegenwoordig vindt de omgekeerde beweging plaats. Ten eerste kunnen we met nieuwe technieken veel beter de sterkte van hout als bouwmateriaal regelen. Bovendien heeft beton een belangrijk nadeel. Bij de productie ervan wordt veel CO2<\/sub> uitgestoten. Bij CO2<\/sub>-uitstoot is beton- en cementbouw \u00e9\u00e9n van de grote vervuilers. Verschillende bronnen geven verschillende cijfers \u2013 ze vari\u00ebren van 5 tot 10% van de jaarlijkse uitstoot door de mens. Aanzienlijk, zullen we maar zeggen. Minder dan het wegverkeer, maar veel meer dan de luchtvaart. Interessant, zeker als zich een goed alternatief begint te ontwikkelen.<\/p>\n

Imagoprobleem<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hout moet kortom twee problemen overwinnen. Het probleem van sterkte en het probleem van brandveiligheid. Brandveiligheid bereiken we natuurlijk door impregneren. Maar net zo belangrijk is het werken met dikke balken, die alleen aan het oppervlak worden aangetast bij brand, en daardoor hun constructieve functie behouden.<\/p>\n

Het sterkteprobleem hebben we overwonnen door de ontwikkeling van kruislaaghout ofwel CLT, Cross Laminated Timber. Kruislaaghout bestaat uit planken die onder hoge druk aan elkaar worden gelijmd. Gekruist, met de nerf in aanliggende lagen loodrecht op elkaar. Het bestaat uit dikke, sterke en stabiele balken en panelen, die toch licht in gewicht zijn vergeleken met het betonnen alternatief. Bij het verwerken van het hout worden defecten en zwakke plekken verwijderd, zodat we precies weten hoe sterk het uiteindelijke product is. Door de ontwikkeling van CLT kunnen we nu zelfs hoge gebouwen maken van hout. Het hoogste nu bestaande houten gebouw ter wereld is 86 meter hoog; maar er zijn plannen voor houten gebouwen van meer dan 100 meter.<\/p>\n

Grote mogelijkheden<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hout is veel lichter dan beton \u2013 vijf keer zo licht om precies te zijn. Bovendien kunnen we hout gemakkelijk bewerken; en door die twee kenmerken is houtbouw heel goed industrieel en \u2018prefab\u2019 uitvoerbaar. In de fabriek kunnen we de houten panelen precies voorbewerken \u2013 uitsparingen maken voor stopcontacten, leidingen, ramen en deuren. Dat wil zeggen dat het werk op de bouwplaats zelf heel snel kan worden gedaan. Bovendien, vanwege de lichte constructie zouden we ook heel goed houten verdiepingen bovenop bestaande gebouwen kunnen zetten. Een mogelijkheid die we nog nauwelijks hebben onderzocht.<\/p>\n

Maar hout heeft uit het verleden een slecht imago overgehouden. Tijd om dat te overwinnen. We kunnen hout in principe overal toepassen in woningen en gebouwen: bij de basisconstructie en in de afwerking. In principe hoef je van een gebouw helemaal niet te zien dat de basisconstructie van hout is. Al is het wel zo mooi als je dat w\u00e9l ziet. Houtbouw kan in principe snel doorbreken.<\/p>\n

Houtbouw sterk in opkomst<\/strong><\/h2>\n

De voorbeelden zijn er al<\/a>. Zoals Haut, een 73 meter hoge woontoren in Amsterdam. Een hout-hybride gebouw, wat wil zeggen dat er ook nog gebruik is gemaakt van beton. En het nieuwe hoofdkantoor van DPG Media in Amsterdam, ook een hout-hybride gebouw. Het hoofdkantoor van media als Het Parool, De Volkskrant, Trouw, NU.nl en Q-music. Rotterdam blijft niet achter met het wooncomplex Sawa op de Lloyd-pier. En in Veldhoven, in de regio Eindhoven, komt een hout-hybride gebouw met woontorens van 100 en 130 meter hoog.<\/p>\n

De Triodos bank gebruikt al een kantoor dat grotendeels van hout is. En er zijn meer initiatieven. Het bedrijf Sustainer Homes bouwt betaalbare houten huizen. Ze hebben er al heel wat neergezet, en hebben nu plannen voor geheel houten buurten. Ook grote bouwbedrijven verkennen deze markt. Nederlandse grote bouwbedrijven als Heijmans en BAM bieden al houten woningen aan. En Amsterdam gaat een houten woonwijk bouwen van 700 woningen. Houtbouw is sterk in opkomst!<\/p>\n
