Om die te realiseren, beschikt de onderneming over talrijke idee\u00ebn voor kansrijke programma\u2019s. \u2018Meer dan we kunnen financieren. We zullen keuzes moeten maken.\u2019 Aldus Bert Jansen en Marco Giuseppin, respectievelijk CEO en CTO van AVEBE.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eigenlijk is het tot waarde brengen van de totale aardappel een terugkeer naar het verleden. In de negentiende eeuw werd alles van de aardappel gebruikt. Er was geen afval, de kringlopen waren gesloten. En voor alles wat de aardappelzetmeelfabrieken maakten was ook een markt. Uit restproducten werd bijvoorbeeld alcohol gestookt en op de markt gebracht.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nevenactiviteiten afgestoten<\/strong><br \/>\nDat beeld veranderde in de twintigste eeuw, toen kleine industrie\u00ebn werden opgeschaald en zich gingen specialiseren. Jansen: \u2018Bijvoorbeeld in alcohol. Daar konden wij met onze prijs niet tegenop.\u2019 Zelf ging AVEBE zich concentreren op zetmeelproducten. Nevenactiviteiten werden afgestoten.<\/p>\n<p>Jansen: \u2018Tot begin jaren zeventig haalden we het eiwit niet uit de aardappel, maar ging het mee met het restwater. In campagnetijd had je hier in de omgeving witte kanalen en rivieren met schuim. Toen dat niet meer mocht, is een kookproces bedacht om het eiwit uit de aardappel te halen en tot waarde te brengen als veevoer. Maar dat proces verbruikt veel energie. Nu hebben we een innovatieve methode ontwikkeld om eiwitten bij kamertemperatuur, vrijwel zonder energie, te isoleren van aardappelvruchtwater. Dat levert tevens hoogwaardigere eiwitten op die je kunt toepassen in onder meer sportvoeding, cosmetica en farmacie. Hiermee liften we mooi mee met de trend van dierlijke naar plantaardige eiwitten.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Giuseppin: \u2018Een vergelijkbare route leggen we af met de verwaarding van vezels. Die kun je terugbrengen naar de akker, maar dat levert het minste op. Nu zijn we zover dat we met aardappelvezels de structuur van voedingsmiddelen kunnen verbeteren, zoals ketchup.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zoektocht<\/strong><br \/>\nMaar AVEBE wil meer. Vandaar dat de onderneming zich heeft aangesloten bij het Dutch Biorefinery Cluster. Giuseppin: \u2018We verkennen samen nieuwe technologie\u00ebn. Bijvoorbeeld om energiezuinig te drogen of om afvalwater te vergisten en er biogas van te maken. In een breder kader zoeken we naar een technologie om kleine hoeveelheden effici\u00ebnt uit waterstromen te halen. In de aardappel zitten bijvoorbeeld bloeddrukverlagende stoffen. En peptiden die de gezondheid bevorderen. Maar tot nu toe kan niemand die er commercieel, op grote schaal uithalen.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joint ventures<\/strong><br \/>\nJansen verwacht dat het huidige verkennen en onderzoek zal leiden tot joint ventures met andere bedrijven. \u2018Daarbij moeten we keuzes maken. In aardappelvruchtwater zitten namelijk ongelofelijk veel ingredi\u00ebnten. Weliswaar in lage concentraties, maar wel heel veel. We hebben dan ook meer idee\u00ebn over kansrijke programma\u2019s dan we kunnen financieren.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Over tien jaar zijn de kringlopen gesloten en hebben we geen afvalwaterzuivering meer.
