Het was een historische plek, in caf\u00e9 Landtmann in Wenen, waar het European Liberal Forum ons debat over de groene economie had georganiseerd. Historisch niet alleen omdat het caf\u00e9 al sinds 1873 bestaat, en een hele reeks gasten hier heeft gedineerd, van Sigmund Freud tot Romy Schneider, en van koningin Juliana tot Sir Paul McCartney (zoals de site trots vermeldt). Historisch ook omdat de zaal waarin wij zaten, gewoonlijk wordt gebruikt voor persconferenties, en dus v\u00f3\u00f3r onze bijdrage al getuige was geweest van een hele reeks met overtuiging gebrachte sweeping statements.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Groene economie was dus het thema. En de vraag: wat is de typisch liberale benadering van dat thema? Waarin zouden liberalen bijvoorbeeld verschillen van de Groenen? Voor sommigen was dat een existenti\u00eble vraag. Intergenerationele solidariteit bijvoorbeeld, zou dat niet een onderscheidend criterium zijn?<\/p>\n

In de schaduw van de Hofburg en het parlementsgebouw ontspon zich vooral een discussie over het aloude thema \u2018groei\u2019. Groene economie als duurzame groei, zo vroeg consultant Stefan Gara zich af, was dat niet innerlijk tegenstrijdig? Zoiets als een vreedzame oorlog? Net zo leugenachtig als de uitdrukking \u2018green jobs\u2019? Terwijl diezelfde Stefan Gara zich in het dagelijks leven inzet voor sterke vergroening van de energievoorziening in Wenen. En terwijl zijn jongste project het ontwerp van een duurzaam transportsysteem voor de hele stad is. Maar, zo wilde Stefan maar zeggen: laten we precies zeggen wat we willen bereiken met de groene economie, en ons niet verliezen in retorische algemeenheden.<\/p>\n

Betaalbaar?<\/strong>
\nModerator en journalist bij het leidende Oostenrijkse weekblad Profil, Georg Ostendorf, vroeg zich af of duurzaamheid geen rem zou zetten op innovatie. En of nieuwe technologie\u00ebn in een groene economie wel betaalbaar zouden zijn. En of de Oostenrijkse boeren wel zouden willen meegaan met technologische vernieuwing van hun beroep. Er waren er meer die daarover twijfels hadden. E\u00e9n discussiant, die een tijd in Nederland had gewoond, vond mijn verhaal wel erg optimistisch-Nederlands. Europa heeft nog een lange weg te gaan. Of zou zijn opmerking juist getuigen van de diversiteit waaraan een groene economie zou bijdragen?<\/p>\n

Ik verdedigde, zoals lezers van deze site niet zal verbazen, dat economische groei alleen groene groei kan zijn. Omdat de technologische ontwikkeling met grote vaart naar duurzaamheid gaat. Ik kreeg daar bijval mee.<\/p>\n

Ik had mij voorgenomen, bij mijn bezoek aan Wenen toch tenminste \u00e9\u00e9n keer Sachertorte te eten. Het is er niet van gekomen. Op weg naar caf\u00e9 Sacher trok een Klimt-tentoonstelling meer mijn aandacht. En mijn gastheer Ronald Pohoryles verbood me, op de terugweg op het vliegveld een Sachertorte te proeven. Het waren slechte bakkers, op dat vliegveld. Een slechte reclame voor zijn mooie stad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
