Met deze apparaten zouden we het vervoer kunnen elektrificeren, ja, een groot deel van de economie. Klik om te vergroten.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/business\/inorganic-chemicals\/Sodium-comes-battery-world\/100\/i19?ref=search_results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chemical and Engineering News<\/a> zegt nu dat lithium-ion batterijen niet meer zo\u2019n groot voordeel hebben boven natrium-ion batterijen. Ja, technologen ontdekken bijna dagelijks verbeteringen in Li-ion batterijen. Er komen steeds meer gigafabrieken die ze maken. Maar lithium-ion heeft \u00e9\u00e9n belangrijk probleem: zijn prijs. Bij het huidige ontwikkelingstempo zal de prijs hoog blijven. Bovendien wordt 90% van het wereldaanbod van lithium gecontroleerd door Chinese bedrijven.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Natrium-ion batterijen krijgen een voet tussen de deur<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Daarom krijgen nu natrium-ion batterijen veel aandacht. Lange tijd dacht men dat ze geen rol zouden spelen in de race. De aandacht komt vooral van Westerse bedrijven die een betrouwbare leveringsketen voor batterijmaterialen willen ontwikkelen. De Achilleshiel van de natrium-ion batterijen is dat zij qua energie maar ongeveer twee derde kunnen opslaan, vergeleken met even grote Li-ion batterijen. Maar ontwikkelaars van Na-ion batterijen zeggen dat ze de energiedichtheid van hun prototypes voortdurend vergroten. Ze zijn nog niet commercieel, maar binnenkort vormen ze misschien een stevig alternatief.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019 kostte lithiumhydroxide $ 6.000 per metrische ton, zegt CENews. Nu is dat $ 78.032. Vergelijk dat met de prijs van natriumhydroxide, stabiel beneden $ 800 per ton. Ruim voorradig, want het is een bijproduct van de chloorproductie (door elektrolyse van natriumchloride, keukenzout). Maar is dit prijsverschil genoeg voor de toekomst van de natrium-ion batterij?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Energiedichtheid<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lithium-ion batterijen doen het beter vanwege hun hogere energiedichtheid. Een sleuteleigenschap voor veel toepassingen, vooral in auto\u2019s. Maar nu de prijs aan de orde komt, kijken industrie\u00ebn hier nog eens naar. Bij nader inzien is de auto-industrie niet de enige afnemer. Er zijn ook stationaire toepassingen. En natrium-ion batterijen hebben een paar voordelen. Ze doen het goed bij lage temperaturen, in de orde van -20 <sup>o<\/sup>C. Klik om te vergroten.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Moderne natrium-ion batterijen hebben een energiedichtheid van ongeveer 160 W h\/kg, vergelijkbaar met die van oudere lithium-ion batterijen. (Moderne lithium-ion batterijen halen 230 W h\/kg of wat meer). Bij deze energiedichtheid hebben batterijen meestal geen koeling nodig, wat een voordeel kan zijn. <a href=\"https:\/\/faradion.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faradion<\/a>, een van de ontwikkelaars van natrium-ion batterijen, zegt dat hun product nog volop in ontwikkeling is. Volgens hen halen hun batterijen in de komende jaren een energiedichtheid van 190 W h\/kg. Toch zien toekomstkijkers geen overweldigend grote substitutie. Dit jaar werd Faradion overgenomen door het Indische bedrijf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ril.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reliance Industries<\/a>. Zij willen een Na-ion batterijfabriek bouwen in Jamnagar, India. Voor toepassingen als langzame elektrische voertuigen, zoals riksja\u2019s, en stationaire energieopslag.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Piekopslag<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>De Californische start-up <a href=\"https:\/\/natron.energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natron Energy<\/a> houdt zich ook bezig met natrium-ion batterijen. Hun batterij heeft een lagere energiedichtheid, ongeveer 70 W h\/kg. Vergelijkbaar met die van loodaccu\u2019s. Maar zij denken ook, belangrijke markten te kunnen bedienen. Hun batterijen kunnen iets wat weinig andere kunnen, namelijk in korte tijd grote hoeveelheden elektriciteit leveren. Ze zijn geschikt als aanvullende stroomleveranciers aan de industrie, bijvoorbeeld in datacentra. En er is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altris.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Altris<\/a>, een Zweeds bedrijf dat binnenkort een commerci\u00eble fabriek van natrium-ion batterijen wil bouwen.<\/p>\n<p>Kortom, natrium-ion batterijen beginnen op te schalen van de proeffase naar commerci\u00eble toepassing. De problemen in de leveringsketen van lithium gaf hen die kans. \u2018Een geweldige tijd om batterijchemicus te zijn,\u2019 zegt Jerry Barker, oprichter van Faradion, tegen CENews.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Interessant?
