Dit overzichtswerk geeft precies wat het zou moeten doen: het is dik (365 pag.), grondig, met veel tabellen en honderden referenties. Een compleet boek over een hoogst actueel onderwerp. Biostimulantia: natuurlijke stoffen die plantengroei stimuleren, opname van voedingsstoffen vergemakkelijken en de plant minder vatbaar maken voor stress als droogte en verzilting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

10 miljard mensen voeden<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Het voeden van 10 miljard monden op een duurzame manier op een goed gedijende planeet is een geweldige uitdaging; aanleiding tot vele soorten onderzoek. Temeer doordat de oude methoden niet meer werken. Traditionele methoden gebaseerd op een reductionistische aanpak hebben ons ver gebracht, tot nu toe. Middelen als kunstmest en bestrijdingsmiddelen waren altijd enkelvoudige (moleculaire) stoffen, duidelijk van samenstelling, gemakkelijk te bepalen en te beschermen door een patent. Maar we hebben sindsdien geleerd dat we meer holistisch moeten denken, omdat alles met alles verbonden is. De landbouw leerde dit als \u00e9\u00e9n van de eerste maatschappelijke sectoren. Moderne biotechnologie laat ons zien dat het leven van planten wordt beheerst door een heel universum waarin geen enkele soort dominant is. Het gaat nu juist om het met elkaar in evenwicht brengen van duizenden moleculen, moleculaire complexen en micro-organismen, in een niet-aflatende zoektocht naar een optimale balans met de complexiteit van de plant zelf.<\/p>\n

Daarover gaat dit boek, Bio-stimulants for sustainable crop production<\/a>.<\/em> Het behandelt geen betere soorten kunstmest of subtielere bestrijdingsmiddelen. In plaats daarvan geeft het een overzicht van discussies over complexe mengsels die het welzijn van de plant dienen; van zaad tot plant en oogst. Het gaat veel over zeewier als een biostimulant, erg geschikt als voorbeeld van de complexiteit en de moeilijkheden bij de holistische benadering. Dat geldt ook voor humus en zijn componenten, voorverteerde eiwitten (hydrolysaten) en nog sterker voor bacteri\u00ebn en schimmels. De gemeenschappelijke noemer? Allemaal stoffen en organismen waarvan de moleculaire samenstelling niet precies te bepalen is. Zelfs een schijnbaar eenvoudig element als silicium heeft een stimulerende functie in moleculaire vormen die we nog steeds niet goed begrijpen.<\/p>\n

Biostimulantia, de volgende fase in de landbouw<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Het boek begint met de wettelijke omschrijving van biostimulantia. Omdat de markt groeit, is er behoefte aan goed omschreven producten. Alleen de EU heeft momenteel een werkbare definitie, gebaseerd op wat deze biostimulantia doen, niet op wat zij zijn. Desondanks moeten octrooibescherming en kwaliteitscontrole nog wel goed worden geregeld, wil de sector blijven groeien. De stand van zaken op de terreinen productanalyse, onderzoek naar de werking, toepassingen en marketing van de vijf biostimulantia wordt uitgebreid besproken in de delen 1 en 2 van dit nieuwe boek. Het slotdeel behandelt twee industri\u00eble case studies over mycorrhiza en plantaardige eiwithydrolysaten als biostimutantia, erg informatief. Het slothoofdstuk gaat over de combinatie van bio-stimulantia met precisielandbouw. Dit geeft ons een fraaie kijk op de manier waarop wij toekomstige generaties kunnen gaan voorzien van voedsel.<\/p>\n

Al met al heeft het boek een v\u00e9rreikende boodschap. Het laat heel duidelijk de beperkingen van de moleculaire aanpak zien. De meeste studies proberen de moleculen te identificeren die een stimulerend effect hebben; maar hier luidt de conclusie steeds dat alles afhangt van een complex samenspel, en dat meer onderzoek nodig is. De meeste studies hebben een reductionistische benadering, terwijl het toch duidelijk is dat er nooit slechts \u00e9\u00e9n oorzaak gevonden zal worden voor de geconstateerde effecten. De beste aanpak is waarschijnlijk nauwkeurige en herhaalde veldproeven in combinatie met automatisering, en precisiewaarneming en precisiebehandeling door gespecialiseerde sensoren. De omvang van de veldproef kan daarbij tot een tiental planten per proef worden beperkt. Laboratoriumwerk en studies in de kas kunnen beter niet meer worden besteed aan het uitwerken van moleculaire modellen (reductionisme) maar worden gebruikt voor de ontwikkeling van betere sensoren, waarnemingsplatforms en verwerking van massale hoeveelheden gegevens.<\/p>\n

Kortom, dit boek geeft zicht op een nieuw tijdperk in de ontwikkeling van de landbouw; een interessante visie over de vele mogelijkheden om 10 miljard mensen op een duurzame manier te voeden.<\/p>\n
