{"id":1790,"date":"2012-08-21T09:43:59","date_gmt":"2012-08-21T08:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/?p=1790"},"modified":"2018-01-15T16:17:20","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T15:17:20","slug":"selectief-gebruik","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biobasedpress.eu\/nl\/2012\/08\/selectief-gebruik\/","title":{"rendered":"Selectief gebruik"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Een recent rapport van de Duitse Academie van Wetenschappen Leopoldina ( op 10 augustus hier besproken door Diederik van der Hoeven) pleit voor een selectief energetisch gebruik van biomassa. Dat is een goed advies. Fotosynthese is prachtig, maar het energetisch rendement daarvan is bescheiden. Gecorrigeerd voor de inzet van fossiele brandstoffen, is wat betreft Noordwest Europese raapzaad-biodiesel de effici\u00ebntie waarmee zonne-energie wordt omgezet in autokilometers: 0.01%. Voor de combinatie van elektrische auto en zonnecellen is het overeenkomstige percentage in Noordwest Europa ongeveer 5% (*). Dat is een verschil van ruwweg een factor 500.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Het Leopoldina rapport is volgens van der Hoeven wel positief over de energetische inzet van agrarische reststoffen.\u00a0 Of dat terecht is, is onzeker. De gemiddelde akker in de Europese Unie vertoont een dalend gehalte organische koolstofverbindingen. Dat leidt onder meer tot meer erosieverschijnselen en een grotere uitspoeling van meststoffen en uiteindelijk tot verminderde bodemvruchtbaarheid.\u00a0 Een voor de hand liggend antwoord daarop\u00a0 is: meer agrarische reststoffen in de akkerbodems te brengen.\u00a0 De verenigbaarheid van een grotere energetische toepassing van agrarische reststoffen met de noodzaak om de daling in het organisch koolstof gehalte van akkerbodems te stoppen is, gegeven het beschikbare onderzoek, een groot vraagteken.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biochemicali\u00ebn en bioplastics<\/strong><br \/>\nVan der Hoeven wiep in zijn bijdrage van 10 augustus terecht de vraag op hoe dat nu zit met chemicali\u00ebn uit biomassa. Deze vraag werd niet besproken in\u00a0 het Leopoldina rapport.\u00a0 Wat zulke chemicali\u00ebn betreft is al flink gestudeerd op de productie van plastics en de grondstoffen daarvoor. Bioplastics zoals polylactaat (PLA) en polyhydroxyalkanoaat (PHA) zijn ook al op de markt. Van deze bioplastics en een aantal conventionele plastics uit fossiele brandstoffen zijn levenscyclusanalyses gemaakt (**). De resultaten daarvan laten zien dat de milieubelasting van de thans gangbare bioplastics PHA en PLA (waaronder Nature Works PLA) groter is dan de\u00a0 milieubelasting van de meest gangbare plastics op basis van fossiele brandstoffen: polyetheen en polypropeen.\u00a0 Zowel de landbouw als de middelen die nodig zijn om van biomassa bioplastic te maken dragen daar sterk toe bij. Als men de milieubelasting van de landbouw niet meerekent en uitgaat van de stengels van mais als grondstof voor PHA dan blijft de milieubelasting\u00a0 door dit bioplastic bijvoorbeeld zwaarder dan de milieubelasting van polyetheen en polypropeen.\u00a0 Wel doen de bioplastics PHA en PLA het beter dan PET en polycarbonaat.\u00a0 Ook deze bevindingen pleiten voor een selectief gebruik. \u2018Biologisch afbreekbare bioplastics\u2019 verdienen bijvoorbeeld\u00a0 vanwege hun forse milieubelasting alleen toepassing wanneer dat niet anders kan. En tegen polyetheen en polypropeen toepassingen met veelvuldig hoogwaardig hergebruik (zoals in kratten voor fris en bier) kan vooralsnog qua milieubelasting geen bioplastic op.<\/p>\n<p>(*) L.
