Plastics in the Circulaire Economie zijn hot. De laatste EFIB-conferentie in oktober 2019 wijdde een traject aan \u2018De toekomst van plastics\u2019. In de laatste editie van het tijdschrift Agro&Chemie<\/a> verscheen ook een artikel over bio-plastics. En de onlangs aangekondigde Europese Green Deal<\/a> bevat een focus op de plasticindustrie omdat deze veel grondstoffen vergt.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gebaseerd op een circulaire economie visie, stelt de Europese Commissie voorwaarden te willen ontwikkelen om zeker te stellen dat in 2030 alle plastic verpakking in de EU-markt herbruikbaar of recyclebaar is. De Commissie is ook voornemens om een regelgevingskader voor bioafbreekbare en bio-based plastics te ontwikkelen. Beide ambities lijken zeker verstandig: ze dekken discussiepunten welke ook bij EFIB en in het Agro&Chemie artikel aan de orde kwamen.<\/p>\n

Er zijn niet veel ontwikkelingen in de plasticmarkt geweest<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Luisterend naar de presentaties over plastics tijdens EFIB, moest ik concluderen dat er tijdens het laatste decennium niet veel ontwikkelingen in de plastic-markt zijn geweest. Christine Lev\u00eaque, Director Business Innovation bij het Franse SUEZ, noemde dat dit bedrijf een interne studie heeft uitgevoerd om de plastics en de bio-plastics wereld te begrijpen. Ze waren niet onder de indruk. Lev\u00eaque noemde het al lang bestaande inzamel-probleem om bioafbreekbare plastics gescheiden te houden van circulaire polymeren. Ze stelde ook het gebruik van niet-bio additieven in bio-plastics ter discussie. En ze concludeerde dat composteerbaar niet noodzakelijkerwijs ook bioafbreekbaar betekent, en adviseerde specificatie van vereiste omstandigheden om te composteren.<\/p>\n

Tijdens EFIB introduceerde Nadia Auclair van het Franse bedrijf Carbiolice een enzymatisch additief, Evanesto, om Poly Lactic Acid, PLA, volledig composteerbaar te maken. Dat zal helpen om een algemeen erkende uitdaging te ondervangen, maar het helpt niet echt bij het probleem dat Auclair ook benadrukte, namelijk het gebrek aan richtlijnen en regels voor identificatie van bio-plastics.<\/p>\n

Geen standardisatie betekent wanorde<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Een gebrek aan specificaties en gerelateerde etikettering is iets dat de markt moet worden verweten. Standardisatie mag misschien niet heel opwindend lijken, maar zoals ik al in een eerder blog uit juni 2016<\/a> concludeerde: standardisatie is bittere noodzaak, \u201c…tenzij we willen blijven steken in autonome biobased productieketens met slechts een sub-optimale toegevoegde waarde binnen een economie.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

En daar zijn we dan, bijna vier jaar later. Het probleem wordt in het Agro&Chemie-artikel omschreven als een wildgroei van plastic producten met het voorvoegsel \u2018bio-\u2019, resulterend in een verwarrend en onbegrijpelijk markt segment.<\/p>\n

Natuurlijk, vanuit een marketingoogpunt is het geweldig om een bio-gebaseerd plastic beschikbaar te hebben om een minerale olie gebaseerd plastic te vervangen. Maar om terminologie zoals \u2018composteerbaar\u2019 te gebruiken voor een product wat dat niet is? Of \u2018bio-PE\u2019? Kom op. Inderdaad kunnen analytische technieken biologisch verkregen polyethyleen onderscheiden van zijn minerale equivalent. Maar afgezien daarvan hebben beide plastics precies dezelfde fysisch-chemische eigenschappen, en behalve voor marketingdoeleinden is er geen noodzaak om het als \u2018bio-PE\u2019 aan te merken. Het maakt de\u00a0 verwarring alleen maar groter.<\/p>\n

Dus nu is de Europese Commissie van plan om een regelgevingskader te ontwikkelen. Dat betekent een nieuwe mogelijkheid voor de markt om de bio-plastics jungle te verhelderen, maar het blijft een schande dat, ondanks de vele goedbedoelende stakeholders, het zover heeft moeten komen.<\/p>\n
