Michael Carus, directeur van het Duitse nova-Instituut<\/a>, heeft het debat over plastics opgestookt. De berg plasticafval wordt steeds groter en de zee\u00ebn worden veranderd in plastic soep, en juist nu pleit Carus voor het gebruik van meer<\/em> plastics. Het tijdperk van de plastics is nog maar net begonnen<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In een interview gepubliceerd op de site van zijn instituut<\/a> begint Carus te zeggen dat \u2018er geen andere materialen zijn met zo\u2019n breed scala aan eigenschappen, die je in elk denkbare vorm en heel effici\u00ebnt kunt maken.\u2019 Bovendien is daarbij vaak \u2018veel minder materiaal nodig\u2026. Er zijn grote problemen, maar die kunnen en moeten allemaal snel worden opgelost.\u2019 Zo\u2019n 20% van alle plastics ter wereld komt terecht in het milieu, waarvan 3% uiteindelijk in de zee. En alle plastics gemaakt uit fossiele bronnen eindigen tenslotte als CO2<\/sub> in de atmosfeer. Onduurzaam. \u2018Totaal onacceptabel.\u2019<\/p>\n

De industrie heeft deze negatieve aspecten lang verwaarloosd, zegt Carus. Ze dachten er goed aan te doen, de problemen te bagatelliseren. Waarom zou je een debat oprakelen wanneer de bevolking niet ongerust is? Maar nu is deze strategie niet langer houdbaar. Alleen al doordat de productie van plastics nog steeds groeit (met 4% per jaar, wereldwijd). En ook doordat plastics vaak een slimme oplossing bieden voor constructieproblemen. \u2018Zand voor cement begint wereldwijd al een schaars goed te worden.\u2019 De huizen van de toekomst kunnen beter gemaakt worden van plastic. \u2018Het plastictijdperk is nog maar net begonnen. Juist daarom moeten plastics zo snel mogelijk duurzaam worden en weer een goed imago krijgen.\u2019<\/p>\n

Plasticindustrie heeft zijn verplichtingen lang genegeerd<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tientallen jaren heeft de plasticindustrie liggen slapen. Of erger, ze hebben gelobbyd voor het handhaven van schadelijke stoffen als hormoonactieve weekmakers. Zij negeerden de berichten dat er steeds meer microplastics te vinden waren in het milieu. Zij deden de ogen dicht bij misleidende statistieken. Als er plasticafval werd uitgevoerd naar ontwikkelingslanden, werd dit \u2018uitvoer\u2019 genoemd, terwijl iedere betrokkene wist dat dit afval gewoon zou worden gestort. En de industrie ging eraan voorbij dat de meeste plastics nog steeds worden gemaakt uit fossiele grondstoffen. Nova-Instituut heeft met hun eigen werk laten zien dat plastics heel goed kunnen worden gemaakt uit overvloedig aanwezige grondstoffen: biomassa en CO2<\/sub>. En uit recycling. \u2018De voorraad grondstoffen is nog goed voor duizenden jaren.\u2019 Het is daarom niet vreemd dat overheden zich nu klaar maken om de zorg voor deze zaken uit handen van de industrie te nemen.<\/p>\n

Carus eindigt met een pleidooi voor het gebruik van de beste materialen voor elke taak. Vaak zal dit een plastic zijn. Maar dan moeten er wel goede oplossingen zijn voor het eind van de levensduur, in de vorm van een omvattend systeem van afdanken en recycling. \u2018Duurzame plastics zullen duurder zijn, maar nu al zegt bijna de helft van de mensen in Duitsland dat ze wel willen betalen voor duurzamere producten.\u2019 En sommige bedrijven hebben de handschoen al opgepakt. Dertig grote chemische bedrijven in de plasticketen hebben de Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) gevormd. Zij willen in de komende 5 jaar $ 1,5 miljard investeren in afvalverwerking, de circulaire economie en nieuwe recyclingtechnologie\u00ebn. \u2018De plasticindustrie kan vernieuwd en versterkt opstaan uit de huidige crisis als de Feniks uit zijn as.\u2019<\/p>\n
