In september 2016 opende Henk Kamp, toenmalig Minister van Economische Zaken, Upcycling Gemert<\/a>, een fabriek die champignonmest verwerkt tot compost, brandstof en warmte. Slechts twee weken later kondigde een persbericht een ander project aan, BIOrescue, met als doel upcycling van dezelfde champignonmest door nieuwe bio-based producten te cre\u00ebren.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hoewel ik ge\u00efnteresseerd was, heb ik op dat moment niet veel aandacht aan deze samenloop besteed. Maar kort geleden werd ik weer herinnerd aan champignonmest toen een blogpost van Doris de Guzman van Green Chemicals Blog<\/a> voorbijkwam die informeerde over BIOrescue<\/a>, en over de voortgang van dit project. Waardoor ik me realiseerde dat het Nederlandse Upcycling-project de bio-based kansen helemaal niet ten volle heeft gebruikt.<\/p>\n

De Upcycling-investering, met subsidie van TKI-BBE, helpt om CO2<\/sub>-uitstoot te verminderen, er wordt warmte gegenereerd en je zou zelfs kunnen stellen dat deze in lijn ligt met een circulaire economie. De investering heeft een belangrijke energiecomponent, maar er wordt ook waarde uit een organisch materiaal gehaald, en dus kan het Upcycling-project net zo goed bio-based worden genoemd. Niet voor niets werkten tegelijkertijd andere mensen aan een bioraffinage concept dat diezelfde champignonmest gebruikt om enzymen te produceren, en bio-pesticiden, meststoffen voor tuinbouw, nano-dragers voor medicijnen of materiaal om meststoffen in te kapselen.<\/p>\n

Upcycling, een gemiste mogelijkheid<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Binnen het \u2018Topsectoren\u2019-beleid benutten in Nederland de chemie en de energie- en agri-foodindustrie het TKI-BBE instrument om richting te geven aan de onderzoekagenda die het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven moet helpen bij de omschakeling naar een bio-economie. Maar het lijkt erop dat iemand bij het financieren van het Upcycling-project de bio-based benadering helemaal gemist heeft. Niets mis met het ondersteunen van energiebesparing en recycling, maar waarom een zo voor de hand liggende keuze? Bij het cre\u00ebren en realiseren van bio-economische mogelijkheden, juist wat TKI-BBE voor ogen heeft, moet je torenhoog willen reiken.<\/p>\n

In alle eerlijkheid: ik ken de feitelijke omstandigheden niet die tot het Upcycling-project hebben geleid. Er waren ongetwijfeld heel geldige motieven om dit project te ondersteunen. En telers en boeren die in hun bedrijf willen investeren moeten worden verwelkomd, zeker in de bio-economie. Het is niet het feit dat het Upcycling-project is geholpen, maar dat dit niet erg ondernemende project werd opgeleverd alsof het de meest innovatieve behandelingstechnologie en -mogelijkheden voor champignonmest integreerde. En dat terwijl het project al vanaf het begin links en rechts werd ingehaald door actievere opdrachtgevers.<\/p>\n

Ondersteuning betekent meer dan alleen een subsidie<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ik wil wel eens weten of iemand de mogelijkheid heeft besproken met het Upcycling-initiatief om de krachten te bundelen met meer vooruitstrevende initiatieven, en hierbij misschien ook nog ondersteuning heeft aangeboden. Want Biorescue is \u00e9\u00e9n van de opties die in hoge mate waarde toevoegen. Je reikt niet meer in je eentje naar de figuurlijke \u2018bio-economische maan\u2019. Juist een samenwerking zoals opgezet door het EU BIOrescue-project biedt veel technologische en wetenschappelijke uitdagingen met het vooruitzicht op economische baten. Ik denk zomaar dat, van deze twee projecten, het altijd de BIOrescue-benadering zal zijn die in blogposts zal worden genoemd.<\/p>\n
