BiofuelsDigest<\/a>, \u2018s werelds meest gelezen biofuels dagblad, zoals ze trots beweren, concludeerde in mei van dit jaar dat \u2018het tempo van uitvindingen en veranderingen te hoog is … om een jaarlijkse selectie te maken of om kwartaal- of zelfs maandelijkse rangschikkingen en samenvattingen van opmerkelijke product- en serviceverbeteringen op te stellen.\u2019 Daarom kondigden ze aan om \u2018… deze op een wekelijkse basis te gaan volgen om gelijke pas te houden met de veranderingen.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Het overweldigende tempo van veranderingen en van innovaties wordt vaker door allerlei partijen bij verschillende gelegenheden genoemd. Maar is dit tempo zo hoog? Na het bezoek aan bio-based conferenties blijf je wat verward achter omdat nieuwe ontwikkelingen zo duidelijk ontbreken. Missen deze conferenties iets?<\/p>\n

Een ontwikkeling biedt niet zomaar een voordeel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Het eerste door BiofuelsDigest gepubliceerde overzicht van de topinnovaties voor de week van 2 mei omvat eigenlijk tien nieuwsartikelen over lopende ontwikkelingen die al bekend waren binnen hun vakgebied. Tot de onderwerpen behoren: bio-based waterstofproductie met microbi\u00eble culturen, Kunstmatige Intelligentie op basis van satellietbeelden, een bio-based brandblusmiddel en zeewier.<\/p>\n

Afgaande op dit eerste innovatieoverzicht doet BiofuelsDigest wat het zou moeten doen: artikelen publiceren over nieuwe ontwikkelingen die later wel of niet in waardevolle toepassingen kunnen resulteren. Maar dergelijke ontwikkelingen als \u2018innovatie\u2019 omschrijven is wat overhaast. Zelfs het waarderen van dergelijke ontwikkelingen als \u2018… belangrijke product- en servicevoordelen\u2019 kan overdreven zijn wanneer deze ontwikkelingen zich nog niet hebben bewezen.<\/p>\n

In feite zal er altijd maar een beperkt aantal innovaties zijn. De transistor was een innovatie, de beeldsensor, de mobiele telefoon, het Internet. BiofuelsDigest heeft gelijk dat er wereldwijd geweldig veel onderzoek plaatsvindt, resulterend in vele nieuwe ontwikkelingen. Elke ontwikkeling is echter niet meteen een innovatie.<\/p>\n

De meeste nieuwe ontwikkelingen betreffen slimme toepassingen van een innovatie. Conferenties missen niet zoveel innovaties. Ze missen vrachten aan ontwikkelingen en toepassingen, maar dat is niet erg. Door in de ontzaglijke hoeveelheid nieuwe ontwikkelingen te duiken kun je eenvoudig verdwaasd achterblijven. Conferenties evalueren nu juist de haalbaarheid en de nieuwheid van ontwikkelingen en toepassingen, naast wetenschappelijke collegiale toetsing, nieuwsagentschappen, de markt en het publiek.<\/p>\n

Meer achtergrond bij innovaties graag!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Vanuit een bio-economie standpunt kun je zelfs stellen dat er veel te weinig innovaties zijn. Synthetische Biologie is waarschijnlijk een innovatie, en zou daarom niet moeten worden veronachtzaamd. En er zijn slimme toepassingen van technologie uit andere, helemaal niet bio-based, aandachtsgebieden. Maar dit lijkt onvoldoende om de bio-economie vooruit te helpen.Beweren dat er een rijkdom aan nieuwe ontwikkelingen is in de bio-economie, is bezijden de waarheid, ook al omdat veel van deze ontwikkelingen meer van het hetzelfde betreffen. Nieuwsorganen zoals BiofuelsDigest kunnen meer waarde toevoegen door uit te leggen hoe nieuwe ontwikkelingen bijdragen aan verdere groei van de bio-economie.<\/p>\n
